Our funding will conserve the priory’s internationally significant collection of stained glass, carry out essential repairs to the historic building and improve visitor facilities.

Founded in 1085, Great Malvern Priory is a Grade I listed church in Worcestershire built on land given by Edward the Confessor to Westminster Abbey.

The priory holds the largest collection of 15th-century stained glass in any parish church in England. Dating from 1430 to 1502, these windows showcase the development of style and technique in stained glass and offer a unique insight into the belief and spirituality of medieval society.

Our development grant will allow the team to shape plans ahead of a potential delivery grant to save this important at-risk heritage. In the long term, the project will carry out essential repairs on the stained glass windows, stonework and roofs.

The project will also:

  • improve accessibility, interpretation and install new toilets
  • remove unsympathetic alterations inside the building
  • deliver an activity plan to bring the priory’s heritage to life for new audiences
  • engage volunteers by developing their skills and employability
  • reduce the priory’s carbon footprint by improving energy efficiency and installing heat pumps
  • enhance the churchyard to protect nature and encourage biodiversity

These changes aim to remove the priory from the Heritage at Risk Register and support its long-term use and maintenance.

Rev'd Roger Latham, Vicar of Great Malvern Priory, said: “We are thrilled to have received this initial support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players we can now develop our plans to conserve our unique heritage, bringing it to life for the visitors of today and preserving it for generations to come.”
