Our work

From local parks to landscapes, castles to community projects – find out more about what we fund.

Over the past 25 years, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has been the largest dedicated grant funder of the UK’s heritage.

We’ve awarded over £8billion to more than 44,000 projects across the UK since 1994.

We fund all kinds of projects, as long as they help to create positive and lasting change for people and communities.

Our funding

In 2019, we launched a new Strategic Funding Framework. It sets out our vision and principles for the next five years, including our two priority areas of focus: landscapes and nature and community.

A good place to begin is our funding page.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We have halted all new single-stage delegated grants (£3,000-£250,000) and Committee-level grants (£250,000-£5million) until at least October 2020. Organisations in need can apply for our £50m Heritage Emergency Fund. Find out more and apply.

Heritage sectors

Community heritage

People at First World War village event

Celebrating our community heritage can help bring people together, feel pride in where they live and save stories and traditions.

Landscapes, parks and nature

Bempton Cliffs

The need to aid nature’s recovery is urgent. That is why funding landscapes and nature is one of our key strategic funding priorities until 2024.

Areas, buildings and monuments

Norwich Castle

Looking after historic buildings, monuments and archaeology ensures that we can safeguard the places people love for future generations.

Museums, libraries and archives

Museums, libraries and archives tell the stories of our cultural heritage. Through their collections they help to give us a sense of place and identity.

Cultures and memories

Children at a carnival

We fund projects which help to explore, save and celebrate the traditions, customs, skills and knowledge of different communities.

Places of worship

Places of worship are among the UK’s oldest and most cherished historic buildings. We want to help congregations become truly resilient and their buildings genuinely sustainable.

Industrial, maritime and transport

Our funding celebrates the innovative buildings, transport and technology that helped to shape the modern world.
