National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Our grant of £2.6million is supporting Nurturing Natural Connections to invest in nature restoration and community engagement across Cumbernauld.
Led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust in collaboration with North Lanarkshire Council, The Conservation Volunteers, Sanctuary Scotland and the GCR Green Network, the five-year initiative builds on the success of Creating Natural Connections in Cumbernauld, aiming to further inspire local action for nature.
The project will plant over 2,000 trees, enhance more than 20 hectares of wildflower meadows and remove invasive species that threaten native wildlife. Beyond conservation, the project will offer advanced skills training and citizen science opportunities, as well as highlighting the health benefits of nature for local people's mental and physical wellbeing.
This varied programme will create 12 new jobs, including six trainee roles. It will also support sustainable urban development by promoting green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to address flood risk, drought and wildfires.
Project Manager Tracy Lambert said: “Cumbernauld is home to incredible wildlife but much of it is in poor condition. We’re excited to begin this next chapter and help people rediscover the beauty on their doorstep.”
