Youth dance organisation, Shaper/Caper is exploring the LGBTQ+ heritage and culture of Dundee in an oral history project, Here Me Out.

Launched during Dundee Pride 2019, and in partnership with McManus Galleries, the young people use creative dance to connect with communities and explore social issues.

Originally called Here Me, the young participants added the ‘Out’ to show their intention of increasing the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in the culture and heritage sector, both as artists and audiences.

Giving young people a voice in the heritage of their community is vital if it is to be relevant and safeguarded for future generations.

Shaper/Caper

Through the National Lottery Grants for Heritage scheme, Shaper/Caper were awarded £36,500.

The funding has enabled the young people to:

  • hold World Cafes and Weekly Hangouts at The McManus Galleries to share their experiences and ideas
  • engage with Equalities Officers in high schools using workshops to provide access and support for other young people wanting to get involved
  • collect oral histories and create a series of films

LGBT Youth Scotland provided training on how to support and champion LGBTQ+ people and issues, while Oral history training was delivered by OurStory Scotland.

Shaper/Caper is now developing a permanent LGBTQ+ strand of work and a new project #ShiftThePower to continue delivering LGBTQ+ activities as a result of Here Me Out.
