The Heritage, Creativity and Community project will restore a historic Georgian building and create a new home for the town's award-winning Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery.

Northumberland Hall was built in 1826 for the third Duke of Northumberland, next to Alnwick’s historic market square. The Grade I listed building once served as the town’s assembly rooms but has been under-used for several years.

Our grant will support the hall’s refurbishment. The project will bring the building back into use and create an adaptable and modern space for the Bailiffgate team to celebrate and explore 10,000 years of Northumberland’s history.

The transformative project will include:

  • creating new facilities and spaces to display collections, exhibitions and work by local artists
  • important improvements to the hall’s accessibility for visitors with different access needs and the installation of key energy and digital infrastructure
  • recruiting three new team members to launch the relocated museum’s programming and exhibitions in 2028

The project aims to make Northumberland Hall central to the regeneration of Alnwick. Bringing the Bailiffgate’s collection and programme into the town centre will provide a platform for more heritage stories to be shared with local people and visitors from across the UK.

Building works are scheduled to start in late spring 2026 and public events and activities will run throughout the project, including performances and creative skills workshops.
