As golf's oldest championship The Open returns to Portrush in County Antrim this month, a new app is set to reveal more about the town's lesser-known heritage.

A jewel on the coast of Northern Ireland, Portrush is famed for its beautiful beaches, seaside attractions and its historic golf course.

But now visitors can learn more about its lesser-known heritage following the launch of a new self-guided trail made possible by National Lottery players.

The Discover Portrush Heritage Experience highlights the natural and cultural heritage of this much-loved place, showcasing sites that help to tell the story of the town, its people and places.

Highlights include:

  • the development of Portrush as a harbour and commercial port in 1835
  • the arrival of the railway in 1855
  • the history and continuing role of Portrush lifeboat
  • the town’s 130-year-old connection to golf

Visitors can enjoy exploring at their own pace using a free 64-page guidebook and mobile app which is available for download on both Apple and Android platforms.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded £25,000 to Portrush Heritage Group to develop the project. They involved the local community and schoolchildren in selecting the best heritage sites to include.

Speaking at the launch event, Jim McGreevy from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Portrush is held in high regard by both local people and the hoards of visitors who come to enjoy this special place all year round.

"We are delighted to be involved in this new offering to help the local community showcase the town’s lesser-known heritage and give visitors an insight into its unique past.”
