9 fossil facts: did you know?  

1. Fossils are the remains of ancient animals and plants, the traces or impressions of living things from past geologic ages, or the traces of their activities
2. Fossils have been found on every continent on Earth
3. The fossil of a bone doesn't have any bone in it! A fossilised object has the same shape as the original object, but is chemically more like a rock
4. The Lapworth Museum of Geology explores life over the past 3.5 billion years and has one of the UK’s most outstanding geological collections which contains in excess of 250,000 specimens
5. The only direct way we have of learning about dinosaurs is by studying fossils
6. The word fossil comes from the Latin word fossilis, which means, "dug up".
7. Fossilised poo is called coprolites and scientists have found coprolites from Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaurs that contain bits of crushed bones
8. The Lapworth Museum is named after Charles Lapworth, one of the most important and influential geologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
9. You can now visit the results of the stunning £2.7million redevelopment at the Lapworth Museum and learn more about fossils

Visiting the Museum

The Museum is free of charge and is open from Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday: 12 noon - 5pm. Find out more on their website.
