This project is exploring the histories and traditions of drag as part of Manchester’s rich LGBT+ heritage.

This project’s focus is to examine and explore the history of drag in Manchester, taking as its starting point the infamous Hulme Drag Ball of 1980 and continuing up to the present day. Both the entertainment and socio-political aspects of drag will be explored including the way in which drag queens have consistently worked together to fundraise for HIV/AIDS awareness charities.

Through collecting oral histories, engaging people in creative participatory workshops and producing a final performance and large-scale exhibition, the project will engage with public in this underexplored area of LGBT+ heritage.
