Berwick Barracks: The Living Barracks

Applicant: The English Heritage Trust 

Project description: To build on the 2020 feasibility study to revitalise Berwick’s heritage by transforming interpretation, strengthening collections care, conserving the historic barracks, reconnecting communities with their identity, improving long-term sustainability, and leveraging new funding and partnerships to create a resilient, year-round cultural destination. 

Decision: Award grant increase of £1,000,000 to make a total grant of £5,499,840 (84%) and agree change in approved purposes.

The Amber Collection Access & Engagement 

Applicant: Amber Film & Photography Collective CIC 

Project description: Following an award made by the Heritage Fund in 2024, to release the legal charge on the leasehold of 9–11 side and first floor 5–7 side and change of approved usage from a charge against the property to a fixed charge over the collection.

Decision: Approve the release of the current charge over the property and creation of a new charge attached to the collections.

Heritage Enterprise: Restore and Reuse Keelmen's Hospital as Affordable Housing

Applicant: Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust Limited

Project description: The Keelmen’s Hospital project aims to save Newcastle’s most significant building at risk by transforming the long-vacant site into much-needed affordable housing, supported by a strong partnership of funders and agencies, growing community interest and the Trust’s proven role in delivering heritage-led regeneration across the region.

Decision: Award delivery grant of £4,629,970 including an uplift of £130,870 (49%)

Applicant: Senhouse Museum Trust

Project description: To connect the Senhouse Roman Museum with its archaeological landscape through digital interpretation, transforming an under-visited heritage site into a dynamic gateway attraction that expands understanding and broadens audiences. 

Decision: Reject 

The Lyceum at Port Sunlight – adaptive re-use of a heritage building (tbc)

Applicant: The Port Sunlight Village Trust

Project description: To create a central, accessible hub for understanding Port Sunlight’s heritage by consolidating dispersed museum collections, improving learning and visitor experiences and securing the long-term resilience of the village through renewed cultural activity and sustainable use of historic assets.

Decision:  Reject 

Dialect and Heritage: More than Words

Applicant: University Of Leeds

Project description: To use local dialect as a powerful form of living heritage to connect people, strengthen wellbeing, foster inclusion across underserved communities and enrich partner collections while celebrating identity, pride and place.

Decision: Award development round grant of £175,916 (88% of total eligible development costs) with the potential delivery grant of £1,177,361 (87% of total eligible delivery costs)

Flagship Peatlands

Applicant: Cumbria Wildlife Trust Limited

Project description: To restore key Cumbrian peatlands and engage the public through accessible sites and activities that highlight their conservation importance.
