The Grade II listed Old Post Office will be transformed into a new home for the world-class fashion museum with improved public access.
The collection is of outstanding national significance and consists of around 100,000 objects spanning four centuries, including clothing, accessories, textiles, fashion photography, magazines and designers’ archives. It features some of the greatest British designers, including Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Mary Quant.
Conservation and interpretation work will protect the collection for future generations, while a new online catalogue will make it accessible to researchers, students and fashion enthusiasts worldwide.
The project will create training and work experience opportunities, particularly for young people interested in careers across the creative industries.
It will work with a wide range of partners and engage underserved and disadvantaged communities across the region through learning and wellbeing programmes.
Bath & North East Somerset Council leader, Councillor Kevin Guy, said: "This project represents far more than capital investment. It will breathe new life into a landmark building, create opportunities for local people, support young people's skills and creativity, improve accessibility, strengthen Bath's visitor economy and enhance one of the city's most important public spaces.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with Fashion Museum Bath anticipated to open in 2030.
