In 1901, RRS Discovery carried Scott of the Antarctic toward the South Pole. Today, transformative redevelopment plans will open up new frontiers for visitors to its Tayside home.

Our £3.55million grant – awarded to the Dundee Heritage Trust – will help safeguard the historic Royal Research Ship (RRS) for future generations.

The project will significantly change the Discovery Point museum and visitor centre – bringing a closer connection to the Tay, to the open oceans RRS Discovery sailed and to the climate science the vessel has informed.

A new restaurant will open up panoramic views of the River Tay from the back of the building. Upgraded learning facilities will further reconnect Dundee’s maritime heritage with the city’s next generation.

The proposed south east elevation of Discovery Point features floor-to-ceiling glass on the first and second floors, offering visitors views of the Tay. The streetscape has been refreshed with seating and planting.

The project will deliver two new cutting-edge exhibitions. These will explore Antarctica’s magnetic pull on explorers and how Discovery’s pioneering scientific voyages – and the data its crews collected – still inform modern climate research.

David Henry, Dundee Heritage Trust’s Chairman, said: “This marks an exciting new chapter in our ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate Discovery’s extraordinary legacy. By combining innovative exhibitions with essential conservation work, we will ensure that RRS Discovery continues to educate and inspire for the next century.”
