Saving the rare spire on Porlock’s church

The Grade I listed St Dubricius Church in Somerset will restore its oak-shingled spire and safeguard the building for future generations.

The church’s iconic, truncated spire – where the top is flat – is believed to be the only one of its kind in the country, but is in urgent need of repair. Its oak shingles, last replaced in 1933, are failing and exposing historic 13th-century timbers to damage, alongside other structural issues including rotting beams.

This project will repair the spire, re-slate sections of the roof and conserve important historic features. New solar panels and heating will improve energy efficiency and create a warm, welcoming space.

Alongside the restoration, the project will deliver a wide programme of activities. This includes traditional craft workshops, intergenerational learning opportunities and heritage-based wellbeing initiatives. These will bring people together, tackle rural isolation and create new opportunities for young people to develop skills and confidence.

Reverend Ann Gibbs, Rector of St Dubricius Church, said: “There are many theories about why the spire has its unusual shape – some more fanciful than others. The most likely explanation is that it was damaged during the Great Storm of 1703 and capped rather than rebuilt.

“Other ideas range from angry giants and distracted builders to fairies or a simple lack of funds. Whatever the truth, this spire is extraordinarily rare and deeply tied to Porlock’s identity. We must ensure it survives for the next hundred years and beyond.”
