This project will look at the cycling history of Forest Gate in Newham – an important cycling epicentre in the late 19th century close to Epping Forest.

This is the first grant that Frames of Mind, a participatory arts organisation based in Newham, has received from the Heritage Fund. With the £44,400 funding, they plan to explore this unique heritage through the lens of local resident Edward Ernest Etty, better known as Ted.

I’m really pleased that my stories will be preserved for good…and I’ve got a lot of them!

At 95 years old, Ted has owned Etty & Tyler motor and cycle repair shop in Newham since the 1950s. He has lived and worked in Newham most of his life and witnessed over 70 years of changing socio-political and cultural trends.

The project will create a fascinating documentary film, ‘Mechanically Minded’, preserving Ted’s legacy. Frames of Mind will also work with community groups and Newham Archives to capture stories, photographs and memorable objects.

Another part of the project will be dedicated to engaging and inspiring primary school children with cycling heritage using stop frame animation.

The project will also create an immersive bike trail using QR codes and an engagement programme, including an activity sheet, with a local artist.

Ted said: “I’ve always been mechanically minded. Trends come and go, but the workings of the bicycle have basically stayed the same. I’m really pleased that my stories will be preserved for good… and I’ve got a lot of them!”
