2-4 Market Place is a Grade II listed site that has stood at the heart of Caistor for over 300 years. However, after more than a decade of disuse and deterioration, the building was added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register.
This project saved the building, transforming it into a space that supports everyday community life and shares Caistor’s heritage.
Community-led regeneration
Local residents took the lead in shaping the building’s future. They recognised how regenerating a derelict symbol of decline into a functioning town centre resource could have benefits for the local economy and the community’s sense of pride in their town. Over 200 locals invested in the project and contributed to its restoration.
The project has transformed the building into a vibrant mixed-use hub, including a café, retail space and commercial units. A restored courtyard provides a welcoming social space for community events, volunteering, learning activities and heritage engagement.
Through an oral history programme and documentary film, people are learning about Caistor’s local history and its Roman roots and archaeological importance.
The project is also creating a new heritage archive that celebrates and preserves Caistor's Roman and medieval heritage for future generations.
Neil Castle, member of the Board of Directors for the 2-4 Market Place project and Secretary for the Caistor and District Community Trust, said at a hard hat tour for Heritage Open Days: “Opening the doors, even at this early stage, has helped people reconnect with the building. It was a privilege to hear the stories and memories people shared – it’s exactly why this project matters. We hope that by being able to show our guests what exists behind the compound, and all the hard work that has been done to date, we have really brought home why this project is so important for the future of Caistor.”
