The Solar Flares Deaf Heritage project explores and shares Scotland’s heritage through digital art.

The Solar Flares project is working in partnership with Deaf History Scotland and the National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive.

Building on previous work which identified a need within the deaf community to share their stories and experiences, eight deaf artists are undertaking research, focusing on various aspects of deaf heritage in Scotland, and enabling these stories to be told to a wider audience.

There are large gaps in the archiving and celebration of deaf heritage in Scotland. This project will investigate many different areas and also create rich digital resources that will bring these topics, people and stories to life.

As well as the exciting artists’ works, a research resource for schools will be created with a focus on deaf representation in heritage and culture, encouraging comparisons with other material in the Moving Image Archive.

The project aims to explore significant changes across society, from technology and education to access and recognition, engaging with deaf heritage from a range of perspectives.
