The museum opened in 1933 to display the collections of amateur historian Herbert Norris. It is the only museum to provide an overview of the whole of the historic County of Huntingdonshire. Today, the collection includes an Ichthyosaur skeleton and a handwritten survey of the town of St Ives dating to 1728. 

This project has expanded and improved the museum, creating a more welcoming, vibrant and engaging environment for visitors of all ages. It has created better storage arrangements for collections, new displays and facilities for visitors and a comprehensive programme of activities for schools, local communities and volunteers.

The project also carried out a range of capital works, including: 

• extension to the museum building along the river front, creating a learning room for school groups
• creation of a temporary exhibition space in the old library room
• conversion of the curator’s house to provide an archive store, reading room and office space
