Cardiff residents Shanice Mohammed and Sara Khallaf attended the event to share their experiences of being involved in a HLF ‘Young Roots’ project called 16 to 60: A Woman’s Voice that explored the history of women from Pakistani, Bengali, and Somali backgrounds in Butetown and Grangetown.

The girls joined young people from across the UK, including circus performers and spoken word artists, at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge for the event which saw the screening of a brand new series of films encouraging others to get involved in #YoungRoots and apply for grants of up to £50,000 to explore their heritage.

Robbie Grabarz, 2012 Olympic Bronze Medallist and Gold Medallist at the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki, said: “I’m delighted to be able to share my story. Sport is my passion and I went after my dream, helped by Lottery funding. I hope that I can inspire some of the young people to go after theirs. Heritage is all around us, and I’m really excited to hear more about the stories that they will uncover.”

Project: 16 to 60: A Woman’s Voice
An 18 month project led by People Around Here awarded a £37,900 HLF Young Roots grant. Exploring the community heritage of women from Pakistani, Bengali, and Somali backgrounds in Butetown and Grangetown in Cardiff from 1952 to 2012. Young people interviewed elders in the community, visited Cardiff Story Museum and Butetown History and Arts Centre and used their research to deliver an art exhibition, fashion show, documentary film, and multicultural feast as well as presentations at community venues and schools. The project outputs then became part of the permanent collection and display in the communities gallery at Cardiff Museum.

The Young Roots programme – grants between £10,000 and £50,000

• provides new opportunities for a wider range of young people aged 11 to 25 to learn about their own and others’ heritage;
• allows young people to lead and take part in creative and engaging activities;
• develops partnerships between youth organisations and heritage organisations; and
• creates opportunities to celebrate young people’s achievements in the project and share their learning with the wider community.
