Our funding is preserving and reinvigorating Tylorstown Welfare Hall, creating a space the community can be proud of. Built in 1933, the Grade II listed art-deco structure is one of the last remaining miners’ welfare halls in the region and has been part of local identity for generations.
The region has faced severe economic and social challenges in recent years. While other buildings of its kind have been closed or destroyed, Tylorstown has endured. But it was in urgent need of restoration with structural elements, interior finishes and critical service systems all at risk of deteriorating beyond repair.
Now, this project is making the building fit for the future. Following community consultation, the Tylorstown team is transforming underused areas into multifunctional spaces that will support the things that matter most to local people.
It will protect a treasured heritage asset while boosting the local economy, wellbeing and access to culture through:
- improved facilities for events and activities including community education, recreation and outreach programmes and a youth film club
- new volunteering opportunities
- the restoration of unique features, such as the building’s art-deco interiors and rare 1930s cinema equipment
These will attract new visitors to the area and provide more opportunities for the people of Tylorstown to connect with their heritage and one another.
