South Wales Miners Museum is an accredited museum and registered charity run entirely by volunteers. Established in the 1970s, it was the first mining museum in Wales and preserves the social history of the South Wales coalfields.
The museum shares mining heritage through machinery, photographs and personal records donated by the local community.
Former miners lead guided tours, offering first-hand insight into working life underground and its impact on families and communities.
This project focuses on strengthening the organisation behind the museum. Specialist support will help trustees improve governance, develop clearer plans for the future and better understand their visitors. The project will also explore income generation, strengthen volunteer management and build partnerships with local stakeholders, helping secure the museum’s long-term sustainability.
The Board of Trustees from South Wales Miners Museum said: “We are thrilled to have received this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to support the Board and other volunteers at the museum by the appointment of three key staff members who will build on the development plan, focusing upon the risks and the resilience necessary to take this unique museum forward with strength and adaptability to the demands of its visitors.”
