National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
The redevelopment will breathe new life into the Grade I listed Victorian workshops of the former Dinorwig Quarry, which has showcased Wales' slate industry since 1972. While preserving the site's industrial character, the project will create new learning spaces, improve accessibility and develop engaging exhibitions that tell the story of how slate from North Wales 'roofed the world'.
The Welsh language – spoken by all museum staff – will remain central to the experience, celebrating how the slate industry helped this vital aspect of Welsh culture thrive. Local communities will shape the visitor experience, ensuring authentic storytelling connects people with their heritage.

Beyond preserving buildings, the project creates opportunities through employment, student placements and training in traditional heritage skills. The dedicated exhibition spaces will also allow Amgueddfa Cymru to bring Wales' national collection to North Wales for the first time.
Lord Dafydd Wigley, Chair of the Wales Slate Partnership, says: "This significant investment will help develop this site as a gateway to our history and culture that will engage and inspire generations today and in the future."
