Combining arts, heritage and citizen science, it was inspired by the remarkable Idris Mathias manuscript map, created over a span of 17 years, between 1945 and 1962.
The partnership project was led by Small World Theatre in collaboration with spacetocreate, West Wales Rivers Trust and Save the Teifi. Working with schools and local communities, participants explored historic collections, learned about the River Teifi's wildlife and heritage and shared their own experiences and aspirations for its future.
Hundreds of people developed a deeper connection with the river through a programme including:
- creative workshops, storytelling and performances
- heritage walks
- coracle demonstrations
- conservation activities where local artists, scientists and community organisations worked together to explore the changes that have shaped the Teifi and the actions needed to help it thrive
- the creation of a contemporary folk map inspired by the original Mathias map
The project culminated in a vibrant intergenerational celebration in Cardigan, bringing communities together to share stories, creativity and a collective vision for the river.
Its legacy continues through The People's Plan, a community-led resource for future action, and a digital archive of artworks, research and learning materials. Together, these ensure that the voices of local people and their commitment to a healthy, thriving River Teifi, will continue to inspire generations to come.
