This project will strengthen nature networks and safeguard biodiversity along the River Ithon and the River Marteg in Wales.

Radnorshire Wildlife Trust (RWT) will lead this work to restore wildlife-rich areas along the two rivers through woodland restoration, wetland creation and effective land management.

It will carry out surveys and monitoring to identify key sites for habitat management. Interventions will include natural flood management such as creating leaky dams and bank re-naturalisation. This will help improve water quality and support a better environment for threatened plant and animal species such as otters, river and brook lamprey and river water crowfoot.

This project will help us to protect and restore some of the most important stretches of river in the county, ensuring they remain healthy and vibrant for future generations.

Partnership working is key to the project. By working closely with local farmers and landowners, RWT will support the introduction of nature-friendly farming methods to improve conditions of over-grazed land for wildlife.

The formation of an Ithon Catchment Partnership will bring together organisations working on the River Ithon to share knowledge and there will be volunteering and citizen science opportunities for local people. A number of paid internships will also deliver practical skills and a deeper connection to the area’s natural heritage.

Victoria Heffer, CEO at Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Rivers are the lifeblood of Radnorshire. They shape our landscapes, support our wildlife and connect our communities. This project will help us to protect and restore some of the most important stretches of river in the county, ensuring they remain healthy and vibrant for future generations.”

This project was awarded funding through the Nature Networks Fund, distributed by the Heritage Fund on behalf of the Welsh Government and in partnership with Natural Resources Wales.
