In 2021, the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. LleCHI LleNI is making sure the people who live there benefit from, connect with and have a say in the future of the world-class landscape.
Residents have had the chance to get involved through a community forum, volunteering and training opportunities, a diverse programme of events and a travelling exhibition on slate heritage.
A small grants scheme is providing community groups with funding to run their own heritage projects and carry out small-scale capital works to help preserve the region’s unique natural and built features.
Meanwhile, a young ambassadors programme is supporting young people aged 13–16 to develop leadership, creative and heritage skills and champion their local area.
Lucy Thomas, LleCHI LleNI Project Manager, said: “LleCHI LleNI is a five-year programme, engendering a strong sense of ‘cynefin’ and local pride in the Slate Landscape, enhancing wellbeing, providing skills and development opportunities and boosting the local economy.
“From schools workshops to community conservation activities, traditional skills courses, walking tours and even a slate football festival, we aim to provide something for everyone to celebrate and enrich the human connections with the heritage of this special part of the world.”
