The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales will transform the Welsh Wildlife Centre in Pembrokeshire into an inclusive hub for nature conservation and community engagement.

The centre provides a gateway to the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve which spans 265 acres and supports over 1,000 wildlife species across wetlands, woodlands and meadows.

Thanks to National Lottery players, the 30-year-old building will be renovated, improving accessibility, offering greater opportunities to engage with wider audiences and generating income to make the organisation more resilient.

The restoration will create a new accessible entrance, replace the central lift and improve energy efficiency. The café will be refurbished and a disused building will become holiday accommodation to help fund future operations.

Most importantly, the project will put inclusivity front and centre. Alongside increasing physical access, it will improve facilities and activities for neurodiverse visitors, and those with learning disabilities and dementia. It will also develop targeted programmes to encourage participation from LGBTQ+ communities and co-design activities and events that celebrate Welsh language and culture, linking these to natural heritage.

Sarah Kessell, Chief Executive Officer, The Wildlife Trust said: "Our project will ensure all our visitors have the same opportunities, everyone's perspective is valued and everybody is encouraged to participate in nature's recovery in ways that suit them."
