Clwydian Range Archaeology Group (CRAG) project Hanes Mewn Harddwch (History in Beauty) will be exploring a previously unknown prehistoric site near Bryneglwys.
First identified in 2020, excavation revealed a 4,000-year-old Early Bronze Age ring cairn containing cremation deposits and artefacts. Surveys suggest this is part of a wider ritual landscape, making it a rare opportunity to fully investigate such a complex in north-east Wales.
The project will combine archaeological excavation with exhibitions, publications and learning resources, helping local communities and visitors to the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape connect with their heritage.
Young people will be engaged through schools and the Young Archaeologists’ Club, building skills and awareness of Wales’ ancient past.
One of the main aims of the project is to demonstrate that, with professional guidance and the support of partners, community volunteer groups can make significant contributions to archaeological research and saving heritage.
CRAG chairperson, Karen Lowery, said: “Diolch yn fawr iawn [thank you very much] to the landowner, our supporters, National Lottery players and the Heritage Fund, for making it possible to explore and tell the exciting story of the Hanes Mewn Harddwch prehistoric ritual site.”
