Mencap is collecting and sharing the stories of the families it’s supported across Wales over its 80-year history.

The charity was founded in 1946 by parents of children with learning disabilities to advocate for better provision of services.

This inter-generational project is recording 50 oral histories from parents of children with a learning disability and parents with a learning disability themselves.

The experiences of families with learning disabilities are often missing from histories of parenting. Now they will be shared in an exhibition that will be displayed in locations across Wales.

The stories will also be digitised, archived and preserved for future generations with St. Fagan’s National Museum of History and People’s Collection Wales.

Wayne Crocker, Director of Mencap Cymru, said: “We are grateful to National Lottery players for supporting us to gather the stories of unheard voices of parent carers in Wales and to celebrate their fight over the last eight decades.

“Today, services have been cut back and remain under financial pressure. Our Past, Their Future will shine a light on how progress is not often a straight line, and what society can learn from its past.”
