United Response is preserving the heritage of people with learning disabilities through a series of peer-to-peer interviews.

The charity, which works with people with learning disabilities and autistic people, supported participants to document their own history through a collection of audio recordings.

Participants across the UK gained new skills in oral history and interview techniques and put their training into practice recording the life stories of 50 of their peers.

The recordings will be showcased in a touring exhibition that will visit London, York, Nottingham and Cornwall in early 2026. They will then be archived in the British Library for future generations to access.

Charlotte Moore, Project Manager at United Response, said: “This groundbreaking project has captured the oral histories of people with learning disabilities and autistic people, many of whom have been supported by United Response for many years.

“The grant from the Heritage Fund has opened up training, job opportunities and the chance for often unheard life stories to be discovered.”
