National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Our funding will preserve and enhance Tylorstown Welfare Hall, reinvigorating it as a vibrant community hub. Built in 1933, the Grade II listed structure is one of the last remaining miners’ welfare halls in the region, constructed during the height of the coal mining era.
Funded through contributions from local people, the welfare hall was designed to improve the wellbeing of miners and their families by offering social, cultural and recreational facilities.
While other buildings of its kind have been lost to time – either closed, repurposed or destroyed – Tylorstown has endured but is now in urgent need of repair. The region has faced severe economic and social challenges in recent years, so the revitalisation of the Welfare Hall will provide a facility to transform people’s access to both support and their community.
The Tylorstown team will transform underused areas into multifunctional spaces, offering vital education, recreation and outreach programmes, particularly for young people.

The project will also:
- conserve the art deco architecture, alongside installing prominent signage, external lighting and interpretative displays that celebrate the building’s heritage
- ensure full accessibility so every member of the community can enjoy the benefits of the restoration
- modernise the hospitality facilities and overhaul the electrical and mechanical infrastructure – ensuring safety, sustainability and structural integrity
- celebrate the hall’s hidden heritage, displaying original cinema projection equipment from the 1930s and its extensive archive
