Trustee and Deputy Chair of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Chair of the Scotland Committee
Ray Macfarlane served as Chair of Museums Galleries Scotland, the national development body for museums and galleries in Scotland.

She took up this position after serving seven years as Chairman of the Recognition Committee, a Scottish Government initiative which formally recognises and invests in collections of national significance held in non-national museums and galleries throughout Scotland.

Ray has held several public appointments in the culture sector including Trustee and Deputy Chair of the National Galleries of Scotland, Chair of Scottish Screen and Deputy Chair of the Scottish Arts Council. She served as Chair of the Scottish Legal Aid Board from 2016 to 2024.

Ray graduated with MA, LLB and MBA degrees from the University of Glasgow and began her career as a solicitor in private practice. She then took up senior management roles in Scottish Enterprise, where she was Managing Director, and Bank of Scotland where she was a senior director and Head of Group Community Investment.

Ray is Chair of the Hopetoun House Preservation Trust and a Trustee of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
