York Minster attracts nearly half a million visitors a year. A £9,797,000 facelift for the historic York Minster gave a unique opportunity for specialists to study and restore the beautiful 311 panels of the six hundred year-old Great East Window as well as repair the stonework on the east front.

But it was not just a cosmetic project, the work also included helping disabled people to better enjoy this iconic building, leaving the next generations with a chance to have an improved visitor experience as well as being able to gaze at the Great East window and appreciate one of the greatest national works of art as its designer, John Thornton originally intended.

Richard Shephard of York Minster said: “York Minster Revealed has been a model of good practice. Many representatives from other cathedrals have come to York Minster in order to see how things might be done. This vast project could not have happened without the help and support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.”
