In 2013, the UK Association of Building Preservation Trusts (UKAPT) lost its core funding and was relying on volunteers to keep going. The charity is a membership organisation that promotes and supports the rescue and sustainable use of historic buildings, but its trustees realised it had to modernise if it was to continue its valuable work.

Sarah McLeod, Chair of Trustees, said: “This grant has meant that the Heritage Trust Network can develop and grow as an organisation."

As a result of the grant, the organisation has restructured and developed a new business model so it can generate more income. It has re-branded, and is now called the Heritage Trust Network to reflect its fresh direction. It has been able to employ new members of staff - a Membership Officer and a Funding and Technical Officer. Its offer to its members has been improved, and its membership base broadened, so it can now offer support to any not-for-profit group that is planning to develop a heritage asset. The grant has also enabled it to set up an office in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, at a Conservation Trust site and develop a new website.
