Transforming the Royal Observatory Greenwich

The 350-year-old site is the UK’s first purpose-built scientific institution. We're funding urgent conservation and significant upgrades to improve the visitor experience.

The site is where heritage meets innovation with historic buildings, advanced astronomical research and London’s only planetarium.

Our £10million funding is helping the observatory to continue inspiring visitors and the next generation of astronomers. It’s helping to restore historic buildings across the site including the Grade II listed south building and Flamsteed House, creating four new interactive galleries and seven refurbished galleries. These spaces will explore key themes in astronomy – light, matter and motion – and include newly conserved collections and reinterpreted stories that share the site’s unique history.

Improving access and visitor experience is at the heart of the project. A new pavilion entrance and garden walkway will allow access to the Royal Observatory from Greenwich Park for the first time. An access tower will make the much-loved 1893 Great Equatorial Telescope accessible to all.

The project is also:

  • introducing a new courtyard called Astronomers Court to host live science events such as experiments, astronomer led talks and object handling
  • creating a new roof terrace above the courtyard to live stream celestial events
  • supporting young people through internships and apprenticeships, including heritage skills development and community event production
