The centrepiece is a reredos designed by Temple Moore and lists 192 servicemen who lost their lives in the Great War.

During an air raid in 1942 the reredos was badly damaged and had since been hidden from view. That was until recently when St Mark’s Church was awarded £12,700 to restore the reredos to its former glory and share it with the wider community.

Working with a local secondary school, the project created a programme of study based on the war memorial to give a detailed picture of each named individual. Students visited the church and were helped to research the soldiers by volunteers. This work also created an educational resource to be used in schools. A community project helped to draw in people of all ages to see a display, trace their ancestry using the war memorial and attended a celebration event at the end of the project.
