A focal point of Harrogate since the beginning of the 19th century, when its opening was called 'a glittering palace of gold', the hall launched the town's fame as a health spa resort

Originally known as the Kursaal, it was known as a multi-purpose entertainment facility. But over the years, it became run down, unsafe and a sad remnant of a golden age. That role as a key feature in the town has now been revived after it was restored to its former glory, partially funded by over £6million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It has been voted the best Harrogate attraction by its enthusiastic visitors.

Providing a forum for national and local entertainment, exhibitions, conferences and open days, its beauty and style prompts wonder in its audiences and visitors. It once again plays a significant part in the life of the town.

John Harris of Royal Hall Restoration Trust said: “The building was originally built for people to visit, to relax and enjoy themselves – through increased access and use, 111 years later, this is still what all of us in the town want to see from visits for local residents and visitors.”

The Royal Hall is planning even more open access with tours and promoting increased use of the building by people of all ages.
