The project involved the design of a set of period gardens, to reflect the fact that Old Durham Gardens has evolved over time.

The proposals were to give the site a new focus and increase the public’s appreciation of the gardens, both as an attractive place to experience and as a demonstration of historic garden design.

Old Durham Gardens were designed by John Heath in the mid 17th century. They consist of two upper gardens, a lower garden and a short linking area to the south. The upper gardens sit on the terrace of the river valley.

These enhancement plans also included restoring the garden planting, as well as improving the garden’s paths, steps and gates.
