National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Investment in Govan’s heritage is helping to foster a growing sense of confidence in the local community. From the world-renowned Govan Stones to Fairfield Heritage, which tells the story of shipbuilding on the banks of the Clyde, the area's wealth of history is being celebrated more and more.
The next step in Govan's heritage-led regeneration will see the renewal of Govan Graving Docks and the restoration of the historic Pump House, the last original building still standing on the site. The work is central to plans for a new community-owned public space, developed in partnership with Glasgow City Council.
The project will also redevelop the Fairfield Rowan annexe of the Fairfield Shipyard and carry out urgent repairs to the pre-1919 tenements. Environmental improvements will be made to key public spaces, enhancing the day-to-day experience of Govan for residents and visitors alike.
Our latest funding builds on earlier investment in Govan's heritage, including work at Govan Cross, the Aitken Memorial Fountain and Govan Old Church, as well as support for the Govan Stones. The consistency of our investment in Govan demonstrates how we plan to help places thrive and to connect communities to the breadth of heritage on their doorstep.
Deirdre Gaughan, Chair of the Central Govan Action Plan, said: “Govan’s built heritage is a source of great pride for the local community. There is sense of expectation locally that we can deliver real improvement over the next five years, working in partnership with the Heritage Fund and other funders. This investment will help to address some of Govan’s most longstanding vacant heritage buildings, turning them into important community assets.”
