The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester used this HLF grant to convert its Grade II Lower Byrom Street Warehouse into a new gallery of the textile industry.

For the first time, the museum’s collection of textile machinery, printing blocks and fabrics were presented in colourful displays that were open to the public.

The new exhibition is called ‘Making Textiles’ and shows the sequence of production from cotton to cloth. Other themes include exploring the relationship between Britain and countries in the former Empire.

The exhibition is displayed on the ground floor of a former railway warehouse. The different levels of the platforms and the rail bed were retained as part of this project, with ramps installed to provide access for all.
