Our £9.2million grant in May 2026 completed a £16m funding package for the heritage-led regeneration, which includes support from Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Built in 1907, Moseley Road Baths is the UK’s only baths built before 1914 to have continuously hosted swimming since opening. In a neighbourhood where many back-to-back homes didn’t have running water, the baths provided private bathing and laundry facilities for the community as well as spaces for exercise and entertainment.
This major transformation will remove the Grade II* listed baths from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, restore the Gala pool, turn a second pool into an events space and repurpose the slipper baths as a health and wellbeing hub and gym.
An inclusive programme of activities and events will invite everyone in. Upgrades and improved accessibility at the pool will facilitate women-only swims, dementia-friendly swims, para and disability swimming lessons and sessions for people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and LGBTQ+ groups.
Restoring and operating Moseley Road Baths is a complex challenge that no single organisation can address alone. Moseley Road Baths CIO (operator) and Birmingham City Council (freeholder) are working in partnership to secure a sustainable, community-led future for the Baths, supported by a coalition of organisations including the National Trust, World Monuments Fund, Historic England and the Friends of Moseley Road Baths. Together, they bring the expertise, resources and local support needed to deliver the project's long-term vision.
Moseley Road Baths sits in a heritage corridor of 17 listed buildings on the road running through Balsall Heath, an area home to many diverse communities which face significant deprivation. Over the past three decades we have supported other local projects including helping the Moseley Muslim Community Association to restore and repurpose the former Moseley School of Art into a community hub.
