This two-year project is exploring the story of Merton and its people over the past 150 years through the medium of photography.

Volunteers are being trained to undertake digitisation work to preserve and provide public access to the extensive photographic collection held by the borough. The collection includes a number of unique images dating from 1869 and covering the grand residences of the village elite, as well as the humble homes of Merton’s working class; and the industrial heritage of the Wandle Valley, from corn and snuff mills, leather processing, paper and copper manufacture, to the internationally acclaimed craft works run by William Morris and Arthur Liberty.

Supported by Wimbledon Museum, Merton Historical Society and Mitcham Camera Club, the project will create a range of educational resources including three local history exhibitions, heritage resource packs and themed class sessions for local schools and colleges.
