The landscape under our seas is just as rich and diverse as that we see every day on the land, but hidden below the waves it is often forgotten or ignored.

Out of sight, few people can see the array of species, habitats and geological features essential to keeping our seas healthy and full of life, but they too are part of our collective heritage.

Welsh territorial sea almost doubles the size of Wales and over 35% of the area is covered by Marine Protection Areas.

Living Seas Wales is a 3-year project, launched in the 2018 Welsh Year of the Sea, using pioneering interpretation and events to engage and excite people about life in the seas off the coast of Wales. By helping people understand the beauty and importance of the marine environment the project aims to change people’s attitudes and behaviours to respect and value the marine environment to ultimately become marine conservation advocates.

Engaging people in something they can’t easily see is a challenge.  By using a variety of engagement methods a wide variety of people can take part. ‘Documenting our past’ involves exploring and sharing historical records to share stories about marine heritage. Formal and informal training opportunities for volunteers are being provided and opportunities are being provided to work with researchers via citizen science initiatives.
