The Lilleshall Project secured public ownership of, and transformed access to, the records of the Lilleshall estate, one of the most important of Shropshire’s estate collections.
The collection covers 800 years of the county’s history and includes some very early maps dating from the late 16th to the early 17th centuries. As well as purchasing the archive through a private treaty sale, the project catalogued, conserved, microfilmed and digitised over 400 selected images of the collection.
Volunteers, under the supervision of professional archival staff, were involved in all stages of the project. Use of the collection was promoted by a series of events, training sessions for library and information staff, a travelling exhibition that toured venues across the county and to school children as part of the Telford Culture Zone project.
