Heaton Woods Trust worked in partnership with Bradford City Council to carry out a series of wildlife and archaeological surveys, guided walks and practical conservation activities throughout the project. Volunteers also had the opportunity to be trained in survey techniques, community consultation, conservation skills (such as coppicing and dry-stone walling), design and IT skills.

The wood, which is located on the southern side of the Heaton Beck valley, is set in a 40-acre site in a conservation area.
