"We’ve looked at what people were doing in their everyday lives."
Project lead
Heaton Avenues in Wartime uncovered 10 hidden stories of local residents during the First World War.

The group focused their research on 10 streets in the suburb of Heaton, Newcastle. From here, the idea developed to produce a story for each of the 10 avenues, based on research into the lives of residents.

The stories of 10 households were also shared in a number of ways. The project team created printed materials, digital resources and took part in a number of Centenary events across Newcastle. Pupils from the local primary school were also involved in helping to curate a display, which appeared in a local pub, a school, a theatre and libraries in the area.

The project culminated in the Heaton Avenues in Wartime exhibition, which was displayed at the Newcastle City Library and the Discovery Museum.
