Greenhead Park opened to the public in 1884 and was a perfect place for a family picnic or day out until it became run down over time and and was no longer safe for the community to enjoy.

A £3,753,000 grant has firmly reinstated the park in the hearts of local people and visitors alike. The original lake was reinstated, buildings were repaired and a new play area was constructed. The addition of tennis courts, planting and signage completed the restoration.

The most important change that this project has brought about is increasing its sense of community ownership.

Now the park is once more loved and used with regular events which bring thousands of people to enjoy its facilities.

Robert Whittaker from Kirklees Council, said: “The most important change that this project has brought about is increasing its sense of community ownership. This is not to take away from the dramatic changes which have happened to the physical park, but before the project, it was seen as the town’s park, and lacked a degree of community involvement.

"The improvements have been dramatic, far reaching, and people have welcomed these changes with open arms. Peoples’ expectations of the park have risen to match this, and whilst this is a struggle to cope with at times, this is a challenge which we intend to rise to, as we are convinced that Greenhead Park is now a park which Huddersfield can be really proud of, and we will do what we can, working with the community, to keep it like this.”
