The Out of the Shadows project aims to examine the impact of the First World War on colonised countries, including the British West Indies, German and British East Africa, and Nigeria.

The project aims to correct the perception that the First World War was solely a European conflict by examining the impact of 1914-18 on certain colonised countries from the viewpoint of the colonised peoples themselves.

It will collect and organise archive materials such as photos, letters, testimonies, maps and stories from the countries concerned, to make these unexplored histories accessible to school groups and the local community through the development of educational resources.

The project will culminate in the production of a website and an exhibition which will tour between the People's History Museum, Manchester Central Library, and local schools and community groups. Additionally, a variety of workshops, talks and presentations at community and public events will enable more people to engage with this underexplored area of history.

Southern Voices Manchester work to address the under-representation of the experiences and perspectives of Southern people (those from Africa, Asia and Latin America) by delivering talks and workshops, supporting people to share their stories.
