The project focused on historic building repair work to Durham Heritage Centre, a Grade II* listed former church.

Work included repairs to the stonework and fabric of the building, as well as improvement to the museum’s facilities for education and care of the collections.

The building became a heritage centre in 1976 and includes features from the church, such as the fonts, wall panelling, and memorials, as part of the museum’s collection. It stands in the Durham City World Heritage Site and is the only museum in the city specialising in local history.

As well as repairs to the stonework of the Grade II* listed building, the plans included improving visitor facilities and disabled access. It was also proposed moving some of the exhibits to accommodate the new facilities.
