The Omagh Hedgerow Heritage Initiative engaged community groups in training, learning and activity to raise awareness on the importance of rich hedgerows.

The groups were trained in hedgerow planting, laying and management enabling them to plant out their new native hedgerows in their communities. This was one of the main outcomes of the project and resulted in communities and schools planting over 1,500 metres of new native hedgerows throughout the Omagh district.

Main activities included training in hedgerow planting, hedgerow surveying and hedgerow laying. Equipment was also provided to facilitate this.

A community hedgerow art attack session was a particularly notable activity. This was a fun activity which resulted in the creation of a large mural of a hedgerow using various art mediums. The mural has been used at many events including the annual Omagh Show, which this year had an attendance of over 5000 people. In partnership with the community groups, a hedgerow heritage leaflet was also designed and produced to convey all the lessons learned throughout the lifespan of the project.
