First World War: Then and Now

Knowsley Library Service
This project explores the diary of Jack Pulman, a first-hand account of life as an overseas serviceman during the First World War.

Knowsley Library Service is part of the local authority-run archives, looking after the history of Knowsley borough and providing a base for community outreach.

This project will explore the First World War diary of Jack Pulman, who served in the Navy. Covering November 1914 January 1918, the diary offers an account of social life as an overseas serviceman and describes Jack’s experiences traveling through India and North Africa. Jack was a keen photographer, artist and musician, and the diary includes a large number of photographs, newspapers clippings, letters and drawings.

The project will work to conserve, transcribe and digitise the diary, so that it can be enjoyed by generations to come. Huyton University of the Third Age will research the diary and share their findings. The project will also work with local charity, Comics Youth, to run learning sessions with young people and create a comic book inspired by the diary.

An exhibition will display the conserved diary, along with the young people’s comic books and artwork. The project will also create educational resources for community groups, schools and researchers, so that a range of people can be inspired by the diary’s unique stories.
