The project involved changing the previous categorisation of displays at Cartwright Hall from culture, chronology and medium, to the three key themes of People, Place and Imagination. This was to allow a mixture of objects from Europe and Asia, which reflect the common heritage of the people of Bradford, to be displayed.

“Connect makes connections: between works of art from different cultures and times, and between Cartwright Hall and its audience.”

The themes being explored resonate with the heritage and experiences of the people of Bradford – of shifting identities, location and dramatic patterns of migration and transformation. The aim was to optimise the strength of the collections and compel new and existing audiences to engage very differently with heritage.

Plans for the grant included a combination of capital and revenue costs. Capital works included the sympathetic redevelopment of flexible gallery spaces, lighting systems, and relevant conservation of the building and collections. The revenue costs involved developing and implementing pioneering, long-term audience and learning development programmes, as well as gallery design, installation and interpretation.
