This project, at Pontypool Museum, was to conserve the historic museum building and ensure that it is set up to permanently house and display collections.

This project safeguarded two aspects of heritage – both the Torfaen Museum Trust’s unique collections and the Grade II listed building at Pontypool Museum.

Pontypool Museum is a community museum, located in the former Georgian stable block of Pontypool Park House – once home to the Hanbury family of ironmasters. Substantial renovations were needed on the south and west wings of the museum building, including essential weatherproofing repairs. Plans also included creating several museum stores, which would enable the museum to display more of its collections.

The Trust’s Collections relate to the archaeology, geology, social and industrial histories, art, craft and ecology of the Eastern valley of South Wales from early prehistoric to contemporary times. Collections also include painting by the war artist Eric Kennington and members of the influential Barker family of Pontypool and Bath.
